Powered paragliding, also known as paramotoring, is a form of ultralight aviation where a motorized propeller is strapped onto the back of a pilot who then uses a paragliding wing to fly.
As with any form of aviation, there are risks involved with powered paragliding. However, when practiced responsibly and with proper training and equipment, powered paragliding can be a safe and enjoyable activity
Ideal conditions for powered paragliding include light winds and clear skies. Pilots should also be aware of weather conditions such as gusty winds, storms, and turbulence which can make flying dangerous.
Powered paragliders are capable of reaching altitudes of up to 18,000 feet (legal ceiling set by FAA), but most pilots typically fly at lower altitudes between 500 to 1,500 feet.
Flying a powered paraglider at night is not recommended due to reduced visibility and increased risks. Most countries also have regulations prohibiting night flights for powered paragliders including USA. Our legal window is oficial sunrise to official sunset.
In most countries including United States, flying a powered paraglider over cities is not recommended and may be restricted or prohibited by aviation regulations. Powered paragliders are considered ultralight aircraft and are typically not allowed to fly over populated areas such as cities or settlements due to safety concerns and the risk of causing property damage or injury in the event of an emergency landing. Pilots are generally advised to fly in designated airspaces away from populated areas, such as open fields, rural areas, or designated flying sites. It is important to check with local aviation authorities and to all regulations and airspace restrictions when flying a powered paraglider to ensure the safety of both the pilot and the public.
It depends on the individual. Most instructors recommend 5-7 days of training. This can be spread over several weekends, though waiting on weather can complicate things. By far the most difficult part of learning to fly is handling the wing on the ground, which takes hours of practice to become really proficient, and must be mastered before the first attempt to actually fly. Existing pilots of other types of aircraft may be able to move faster through some parts of the training (regulations, aerodynamics), but the basic flying of a PPG is completely different from any other aircraft, with little transfer from other types of flying.
In most countries, pilots are required to obtain a paramotor pilot's license or certification before flying a powered paraglider. This typically involves completing a training course and passing a written and practical exam.In US we do not need any licence to fly powered paragliders since we are flying under FAA Far 103 category (ultralights). However training is highly recommended.
