SIV Training / Maneuvers Course in Paragliding and Powered Paragliding: A Complete Guide
What is SIV Training?
SIV (Simulation d’Incident en Vol), also known as maneuvers training, is an advanced paragliding and powered paragliding course focused on preparing pilots to handle real in-flight emergencies. By intentionally inducing and managing wing collapses, stalls, spins, and other dynamic situations, pilots learn to regain control safely and confidently.
Why is SIV Important in Paragliding and Powered Paragliding?
Safety is a top priority in paragliding and powered paragliding (PPG). SIV training equips pilots with:
-
Crisis Management Skills
-
Increased Confidence under pressure
-
Better Wing Understanding
-
Improved Reaction Times during unexpected scenarios
Whether you are a beginner looking to progress or a seasoned pilot seeking to refresh skills, SIV is a valuable step in your flight development.
What Happens in an SIV Course?
SIV courses are typically held over water with a safety boat on standby. You’ll fly with a radio-equipped instructor guiding you step-by-step through various maneuvers.
Common Maneuvers Covered:
-
Asymmetric Collapses
-
Stalls and Spin Recovery
-
Spiral Dives
-
Wingovers
-
Pitch Control
-
Reserve Deployment Practice
Each maneuver is repeated under controlled conditions, building muscle memory and confidence.
SIV for Powered Paragliding (PPG)
While powered paragliders add the complexity of a motor, many of the same SIV principles apply. Pilots practice:
-
Power-on and power-off maneuvers
-
Energy management with throttle
-
Reserve throw under load
-
Dealing with asymmetric thrust scenarios
Due to the added mass and torque, it’s vital that PPG pilots do SIV with instructors experienced in motorized flight.
Best Practices for Choosing an SIV Course
Choosing the right course makes a huge difference in your experience and outcomes.
Tips:
-
Look for Certified Instructors (USPPA, BHPA, USHPA, etc.)
-
Ensure Water Safety and Rescue Coverage
-
Check Equipment Compatibility with your wing/motor
-

FAQs
Is SIV training dangerous?
When conducted properly with experienced instructors and over water, SIV is very safe. The purpose is to train for emergencies in a controlled setting.
Do I need SIV as a beginner?
You don’t need SIV in your first 50 flights, but once you're flying solo confidently, it’s a critical step to becoming a safe, skilled pilot.
Conclusion
If you're serious about mastering paragliding or powered paragliding, SIV and maneuvers training should be on your radar. It’s one of the most effective ways to build real-world flying skills that could save your life.

Paragliding Reserve Parachute Repack Classes: Ensuring Safety in the Skies
During a typical reserve parachute repack class, students will learn the step-by-step process of packing a reserve parachute, including how to properly fold the canopy, secure the lines, and pack the parachute into its deployment bag. Instructors will also demonstrate how to inspect the parachute for any signs of damage or wear, such as frayed lines or torn fabric, and how to properly store the parachute to keep it in optimal condition.
In addition to hands-on instruction, reserve parachute repack classes also often include information on the importance of regular maintenance and inspection of safety equipment, as well as tips on how to recognize when a reserve parachute needs to be repacked or replaced. By taking a reserve parachute repack class, paragliders can rest assured that their safety equipment is in good working order and can trust that it will deploy properly in case of an emergency.
Overall, reserve parachute repack classes are an essential component of paragliding safety and should be a priority for all paragliders. By taking the time to properly pack and maintain their reserve parachutes, paragliders can enjoy their flights with peace of mind, knowing that they are prepared for any eventuality that may arise in the skies.
